Noguchi Exhibit | Community Center
For this project I have designed a museum annex and community center in the Powerhouse Arena Bookstore in DUMBO, Brooklyn. The annex is an addition to the Noguchi Museum in Queens, dedicated to the artistic works of Isamu Noguchi, a Japanese-American sculptor. The program includes three exhibition spaces, two classrooms, offices for the Director and staff, storage for art, coats and supplies, as well as two ADA compliant W.C's.
Many of Noguchi's provocative sculptural works share elements of geometry and inspire curiosity regarding Noguchi's construction techniques, as well as a desire to see that which is hidden, combined with an implicit knowledge of what that might be. The proximity of the bookstore to the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges allows for truncated views of both of these iconic structures and it is this very truncated nature that inspired the form and visibility of my design. A monolithic glass structure occupies the interior space, with concrete partitions on both levels defining what we can see from outside and what we must travel inside to view.
